Ibadan Oba Coronation Crisis: High Chiefs Shun Elevation!

My people, wahala dey o! Just when we thought things were settling down, a fresh drama has unfolded in Ibadanland. The ongoing tussle between the traditional institution and the Oyo State government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, seems to be getting hotter than a plate of isi ewu on a Friday night. And the latest twist? Three prominent High Chiefs, who were supposed to be coronated as Obas, have decided to boycott the whole event!

The Coronation That Wasn’t: High Chiefs Say No!

Imagine the scene: red carpets, dignitaries, drummers, and everyone eagerly awaiting the elevation of these respected High Chiefs to the revered status of Obas. But alas, it seems that celebration will have to wait. High Chief Kola Babalola (Ekaarun Olubadan), High Chief Akeem Bolaji Adewoyin (Ekerin Balogun), and High Chief Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli (Ekaarun Balogun) were all lined up for this prestigious promotion. However, they’ve made it clear they won’t be showing up for the coronation slated for Friday.

This decision isn’t coming out of nowhere, mind you. It’s a direct fallout from the deepening rift between the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, his council members, and the state government. The bone of contention? The government’s plan to promote these High Chiefs to Obas.

Behind the Scenes: A Battle of Wills?

According to our sources, the Oyo State government had, a few days ago, asked the Olubadan to submit the list of those eligible for promotion to Obas so they could make proper arrangements. Now, you’d think this would be a straightforward process, right? Well, not in this case.

Palace insiders whispered that the Olubadan requested more time to compile and send the list. But it seems the state government wasn’t in the mood for delays. Just a few days later, they released the names of those due for elevation without waiting for the Olubadan’s official submission. Na so dem take spoil market!

Solidarity in Action: Ibadan Indigenes Take a Stand

This move by the government has not gone down well with many. Our correspondent gathered that traditional chiefs, leaders, and even prominent indigenes of Ibadanland have collectively decided to shun the coronation event. It’s a clear sign of solidarity with the Olubadan and a subtle protest against what many see as an overreach by the state government.

Adeola Oloko, the Media Aide to the Olubadan, confirmed that the three High Chiefs won’t be attending. He stated that they had informed the Olubadan of their unavailability and even asked for a postponement. He also clarified that the state government has been duly informed of their absence. Interestingly, Oloko insisted there’s no ‘crisis’ between the Olubadan and the Governor, perhaps trying to douse the tension, but the actions speak louder than words.

In his statement, Oloko said, “For the avoidance of doubt, the three concerned High Chiefs due to be coronated have formally informed the Olubadan that they would be unavailable, and have, therefore, asked for postponement.” This means the ball is now firmly in the court of the Oyo State government. Will they proceed with a coronation that the key players are boycotting? Or will they heed the call for postponement and try to mend fences?

This situation highlights the delicate balance of power and respect within our traditional institutions and their relationship with modern governance. We’ll keep our eyes peeled on this developing story. What are your thoughts on this unfolding drama? Let us know in the comments!
