Kaduna State has approved the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–Academic Staff Union of Universities salary agreement for academic staff of Kaduna State University, with the new package scheduled to take effect in October 2026.
What the approval covers
The package includes the revised Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and other applicable adjustments. The state also approved a one-off ₦300 million payment toward Earned Academic Allowance, against a backlog reported to be above ₦800 million.
Decision comes during an active dispute
The announcement follows a warning strike and an indefinite strike by the university’s ASUU branch. Government officials appealed to ASUU and other campus unions, including SSANU, NASU and NAAT, to return to dialogue and seek a sustainable resolution.
The nine-member negotiation committee established by the governor was tasked with reviewing the unions’ demands and proposing a framework that the state could implement. The approval is therefore both a welfare measure and an effort to address a dispute that has disrupted academic activity.
Pressure now shifts to implementation
For staff and students, the value of the announcement will depend on timely payment, clear documentation and a credible plan for settling inherited obligations. The university also needs predictable funding for laboratories, examinations, accreditation and routine teaching operations.
Resolving the dispute will require more than a salary decision. It will require trust between the state, university management and unions, as well as transparent monitoring of the commitments announced.
Conclusion
The approved package offers a possible route out of the KASU impasse. Prompt implementation and continued negotiation will determine whether it becomes a lasting settlement or only a temporary pause in the dispute.
