Wike Rejects Uzodimma’s Senate Presidency Bid as APC Rift Deepens

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has publicly opposed Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma’s reported ambition to become Nigeria’s next Senate President. The declaration adds a fresh layer to the political disagreement between Wike and the APC Governors Forum as parties begin positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.

What Wike said

Speaking during a television interview, Wike said Uzodimma’s tenure as governor would end in January 2028 and stated that he would not support the governor for the Senate’s top presiding office. He also alleged that the governor was trying to influence the emergence of lawmakers who could back the ambition.

The coalition at the centre of the dispute

The comments are connected to Wike’s Rainbow Coalition, a cross-party platform he has presented as a vehicle for mobilising support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election. The initiative has drawn resistance from some APC governors, who have questioned whether it could weaken the party’s structure.

The disagreement comes after the Wike–APC governors rift became a recurring issue in national political discussions. It also highlights how alliances built around the 2027 contest are developing outside formal party organs.

Why the Senate rules matter

Recent changes to the Senate’s standing rules could shape the contest. The revised framework places greater emphasis on ranking and length of service when lawmakers seek presiding or principal positions. That may affect the prospects of first-time senators elected in 2027, depending on how the rules are applied.

For governors seeking a transition to the Senate, the debate is therefore not only about political endorsements. It also involves eligibility, parliamentary experience and the ability to build support across the chamber.

What happens next

Wike’s position is unlikely to settle the contest on its own, but it could sharpen the divide between supporters of the coalition and governors who prefer a more tightly controlled APC campaign structure. More declarations are expected as candidates and party blocs test their strength.

Readers can follow the wider political and civic debate as the 2027 cycle gathers pace. The immediate question is whether the dispute produces reconciliation or a deeper battle over influence.

Conclusion

Wike’s rejection of Uzodimma’s reported Senate Presidency bid shows that the 2027 political contest is already affecting relationships within the governing camp. The next stage will depend on negotiations, party decisions and the Senate’s rules.
