The numbers from eastern Taraba have kept rising all weekend, and each revision is worse than the last. The death toll from an attack by gunmen on the community of Binnari has reached at least 50, survivors and Amnesty International told AFP on Sunday, after more bodies — many recovered from a river — were discovered.

What Happened in Binnari

Gunmen on motorcycles, identified by residents as a suspected bandit gang, swarmed Binnari shortly after Friday prayers, killing dozens, looting stores and setting shops and market stalls ablaze. A resident, Bashir Mamuda Musa, described the grim arithmetic of the aftermath: seven bodies found on Friday after the attack, and another 43 discovered in the river on Saturday — bringing the toll to 50. A second resident, Abdullahi Zakari, confirmed the figure, explaining that many residents, including women and children, fled towards the river to escape and drowned in the panic.

Amnesty International put the toll at 52 on Sunday. Its Nigeria director, Isa Sanusi, said some victims were chased into the river by the gunmen. Taraba’s police spokesman, Victor Msheliza, said officers had found bodies in the river of people trying to escape, that police were deployed immediately with more deployments sent, and that searches of the area were continuing.

The Pattern Behind the Attack

Taraba sits where Nigeria’s trouble spots meet — sandwiched between the North-East’s long-running insurgency and the central belt’s banditry crisis. The gangs driving that crisis are motivated by money rather than ideology, and they specialise in exactly the terrain Binnari occupies: poorly policed rural communities, raided for loot and ransom, taxed where they want to farm or mine. Amnesty’s charge after the attack was pointed — that rural communities have been left at the mercy of gunmen who commit atrocities with impunity, and that the consistent failure to bring perpetrators to justice emboldens the next attack.

The Security Picture Nationwide

The massacre lands in a season of grinding security news: mass graves of a different kind in the 17,000 Nigerians still missing after the North-East insurgency, rescue operations like the Plateau operations that freed kidnap victims and held 12 suspects, and bandits striking communities right after Friday prayers in Niger State — the same attack-timing pattern seen in Binnari. The military’s wins, such as the Kebbi road gun battle that freed six kidnap victims, show the state can respond — the harder question is prevention.

Final Word

Binnari’s dead deserve more than a weekend headline, and the search continues even as you read this. What the community needs next is what every raided community needs: arrests that stick, a military presence that stays, and a justice system that ends the impunity cycle Amnesty describes. This page will keep tracking the official response as the numbers and investigations develop.
