The peaceful atmosphere of Palm Sunday in Plateau State was shattered as unknown gunmen launched a deadly assault on a university community, leaving at least 30 people dead and many others injured. The attack, which occurred on Sunday night, has once again plunged the region into mourning and raised serious concerns about the safety of residents in the Middle Belt.

A Night of Terror in Gari Ya Waye

According to local residents and officials, the attackers stormed the Gari Ya Waye community in the Angwan Rukuba district of Jos North. Witnesses described a scene of chaos as the gunmen shot indiscriminately at people who were going about their evening activities. Markus Audu Kando, a resident and youth leader, confirmed the rising death toll, stating that many of the injured are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Government Imposes 48-Hour Curfew

In response to the senseless violence, the Plateau State government has declared a 48-hour curfew in the affected district to prevent further breakdown of law and order. The University of Jos has also taken the difficult decision to suspend all examinations that were scheduled to begin on Monday, March 30, 2026, as the community grapples with the shock of the incident.

Conclusion

This latest tragedy highlights the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s central region. As the families of the victims begin the painful process of burying their loved ones, there are renewed calls for the security agencies to step up their efforts in protecting vulnerable communities and bringing the perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice.
