The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has put to rest any rumors of a possible return for its former National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam. In a strongly worded statement released by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), the leadership reaffirmed that Gabam remains expelled from the party, citing a history of alleged financial misconduct and activities deemed detrimental to the party’s interests.

A Long-Standing Disciplinary Process

The journey to Gabam’s final exit began in June 2025, when he was initially suspended following a series of internal investigations. By October 2025, the party’s disciplinary organs moved to formalize his expulsion. Despite various attempts to challenge this decision through factional maneuvers and legal threats, the SDP’s central leadership maintains that the process followed the party’s constitution to the letter.

The Impact on Party Unity

The ongoing friction within the SDP highlights the challenges faced by Nigeria’s opposition parties in maintaining a united front. While some local chapters, particularly in Gombe, have seen conflicting claims regarding leadership, the national body insists that the current administrative structure is the only one recognized by law. This internal cleansing, according to party insiders, is necessary to reposition the SDP as a credible alternative in the Nigerian political arena.

Conclusion

As the SDP moves forward without Gabam, the focus shifts to consolidating its grassroots support and preparing for upcoming legislative bye-elections. The party’s ability to move past this leadership crisis will be a litmus test for its institutional strength.
