Nigeria’s fuel retail landscape could soon look different as the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited moves to deploy between 50 and 70 smart, self-service filling stations nationwide.

What the planned stations will offer

The proposed outlets are expected to combine conventional petrol sales with electric-vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas and other mobility services. The first phase is expected to take shape within six months.

Why the model is attracting attention

Self-service technology can shorten queues and bring digital controls into fuel retail. It may also give motorists more options as Nigeria’s energy market gradually expands beyond petrol.

Employment concerns remain

The shift has also prompted concern among petrol attendants, whose duties could be reduced when customers operate pumps themselves. The transition will require clear labour plans, retraining opportunities and safe operating procedures.

The success of the programme will depend on reliable equipment, transparent pricing and customer support. Smart stations should make transactions simpler without excluding motorists who need assistance.

Conclusion

The planned rollout could modernise fuel retail, but technology and jobs must be addressed together. A measured transition would allow consumers to benefit while workers receive a fair path into the changing energy economy.
