New Directive: Renounced Citizens to Forfeit Nigerian Passports

In a significant policy shift, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has mandated the immediate withdrawal and deactivation of passports belonging to individuals who have formally renounced their Nigerian citizenship. This directive, grounded in constitutional provisions, aims to reinforce border security, combat identity fraud, and uphold the sanctity of Nigerian nationality.

The policy targets Nigerians whose renunciation requests have received official presidential approval. Once the renunciation process is complete, these individuals will no longer be entitled to possess or utilize Nigerian travel documents. The Minister’s Special Adviser on Media, Alao Babatunde, cited Section 29, subsections (1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) as the legal basis for this action. This section stipulates that a Nigerian citizen of full age wishing to renounce their citizenship must make a declaration, and upon registration of this declaration, the individual ceases to be a citizen of Nigeria.

Upholding National Integrity and Combating Fraud

Minister Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the loss of Nigerian citizenship naturally entails the forfeiture of any sovereign document issued by the state, including passports. This measure is part of a broader initiative by the Ministry of Interior to reform passport and visa processes, ensuring that only legitimate citizens hold Nigerian travel documents. The Minister articulated that these efforts are crucial for strengthening border controls, preventing identity theft, and maintaining the integrity of Nigerian citizenship.

“We will continue to strengthen systems that secure Nigeria’s borders, prevent identity fraud, preserve the sanctity of Nigerian citizenship, and facilitate legitimate travel while preventing unauthorized or ineligible access,” Tunji-Ojo stated. This directive underscores the government’s commitment to robust national security frameworks and responsible citizenship.
