A coalition of Niger Delta civil society organisations has given the Federal Government until September 1 to address alleged irregularities involving an oil block.

Groups demand clarification

The coalition said it expects the government to respond to its concerns within the stated deadline. The matter adds to continuing debates about transparency, ownership, community interests and accountability in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.

Oil-producing communities and civil society groups have repeatedly called for decisions affecting petroleum assets to be explained clearly and handled in a way that protects public value and local stakeholders.

Sector under scrutiny

The latest ultimatum comes as Nigeria’s oil industry faces wider attention over production, regulation, investment and the implementation of petroleum reforms. Government agencies and operators are under pressure to demonstrate that the sector delivers measurable benefits.

Next step

The September 1 deadline could increase pressure for an official explanation. Until the government responds, the allegations remain claims by the coalition and should be treated as such.
