The Federal Government plans to introduce electricity tariffs for renewable energy assets installed at 25 universities and teaching hospitals across Nigeria.

Why the tariff is being proposed

Power Minister Joseph Tegbe said the charges would help maintain government-funded renewable infrastructure. He made the disclosure during the unveiling of the Renewable Asset Management Company in Abuja.

The Rural Electrification Agency said it has deployed 82 megawatts of solar-hybrid generation across 22 federal universities and three teaching hospitals since 2017. The agency argued that beneficiary institutions should contribute to sustaining the facilities.

Balancing cost and reliable power

The proposal is expected to raise questions about how much institutions will pay and how the revenue will be managed. For universities and hospitals, the central issue will be whether the tariff supports reliable electricity without creating a new burden for already stretched budgets.

Conclusion

The plan moves renewable energy from a free public asset toward a maintenance-funded model. Its success will depend on transparent billing, dependable service and careful protection of essential public institutions.
