The Federal Government has launched a $1 billion social protection programme aimed at helping vulnerable Nigerian households move from temporary relief to economic self-reliance.

Programme combines support and empowerment

The Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project was unveiled in Abuja alongside other humanitarian and poverty-reduction initiatives. First Lady Oluremi Tinubu said the approach would combine immediate stabilisation with pathways to recovery and independence.

Other initiatives include a coordinated humanitarian response system, emergency cash transfers, a ministerial blueprint and a magazine documenting beneficiaries’ experiences.

Unified data at the centre

Officials said the new system is intended to reduce duplication among social interventions by using unified records to identify households, assess needs and track progress. The stated aim is to move from counting beneficiaries to measuring whether support improves household outcomes.

Conclusion

The programme’s impact will depend on accurate targeting, transparent delivery and measurable improvements in household welfare. Nigerians will be watching how the promised transition from palliatives to empowerment works in practice.
