Cricket wrote its own Naija-got-heart script in Abuja on Sunday — and it took exactly one run. Nigeria edged Uganda by a single run at the Nigeria Cricket Federation Oval 1 to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier C, completing a perfect five-match campaign and, along the way, beating Uganda for the first time in the team’s T20 history.

How the Nail-Biter Unfolded

Winning the toss and batting first, Nigeria scraped to 148 all out in 19.4 overs. Isaac Danladi led the charge with a whirlwind 47 off 28 balls — three fours, four sixes — while Ali Rahmon’s 35 off 23 and Selim Salau’s 30 off 24 kept the innings breathing. Uganda’s Joseph Baguma had other ideas, ripping through the middle order with four wickets for 21 runs, and a promising 129 for 6 nearly unravelled completely before the lower order squeezed out the last drops.

The chase had Uganda’s names all over it. Riazat Ali Shah — Nigeria’s long-time tormentor — smashed 60 off 36, sharing a 78-run stand with Olipa Gerald to put the visitors firmly in charge. Then Nigeria’s bowlers landed the double blow: Sylvester Okpe removed both Riazat and Gerald, and Isaac Okpe claimed two more, including the dangerous Alpesh Ramjani.

The Final Over That Stopped a Nation

Uganda needed six runs from the last over with seven wickets down. Vincent Adewoye conceded just four from the first five deliveries; Cyrus Kakuru was run out for 11 in the chaos; two needed off the final ball to force a tie — and Juma Miyagi was run out going for the second run. Uganda stranded at 147 for 9. Nigeria: winners by one run, in the noisiest way imaginable.

Why It Matters Beyond Sunday

Three things make this bigger than a trophy: it was Nigeria’s first-ever T20 win over Uganda after 13 attempts; it sealed the Africa Sub-Regional C title with a perfect record; and it booked progression to the final round of qualifying next year — one step closer to a first senior Men’s T20 World Cup that would ripple through the sport back home. Nigerian football’s weekend offered its own lessons in nerves, with the NPFL leaders stumbling in Benin and the Flamingos preparing their World Cup last-16 date with Mexico — 2026 is quietly becoming the year Nigerian sport refuses to be boring.

Final Word

From Danladi’s fireworks to Adewoye’s over and that final run-out, this was a team victory in the purest sense — and a statement that Nigerian cricket belongs on the big qualification stage. The next round comes next year; Sunday says Nigeria will not travel there as tourists.
