Police in Kano State have arrested a 35-year-old man suspected of belonging to a criminal syndicate linked to abductions and cattle rustling across Kano, Kaduna and Katsina. The arrest followed a targeted operation by the command’s anti-kidnapping team.
How the arrest happened
Authorities said the suspect, identified as Habibu Bello, was taken into custody on September 14 after intelligence led investigators to him in Kaduna State. A second suspect was also arrested during follow-up inquiries into the alleged network.
Police alleged that the group operated across state boundaries, making cooperation between neighbouring commands important to the investigation. Cross-border criminal networks can move victims, stolen livestock and ransom proceeds through several jurisdictions, complicating early response.
Allegations under investigation
According to the police account, Bello allegedly confessed to involvement in several kidnapping and armed-robbery incidents, including an abduction for which a N20 million ransom was reportedly paid. The claims remain allegations while investigators work to establish the facts and prepare any case for court.
Other evidence recovered
During a separate clearance operation in Bebeji, officers also recovered a drone found at Hawan Tarau village. Investigators are trying to determine its ownership and how it may relate, if at all, to criminal activity in the area.
The case comes as communities across the North continue to demand faster intelligence sharing and stronger protection for travellers, farmers and rural residents. Recent police communication on security matters has also highlighted the need for the public to rely on verified information rather than viral claims.
What happens next
Investigators are expected to question the suspects, compare their statements with reports from victims and trace any financial or logistical links across the three states. A transparent process will be important both for accountability and for avoiding mistaken identity.
Residents can support law-enforcement work by sharing credible information through official channels while avoiding publication of details that could endanger victims or compromise operations. Security agencies, in turn, must provide timely updates that protect due process.
Conclusion
The arrest may help investigators understand a wider criminal network operating across state lines. Its significance will depend on the evidence gathered, the protection offered to communities and whether any prosecution is handled fairly and openly.
