UCH Resident Doctors Resume Work, but Power and Water Demands Remain

Resident doctors at the University College Hospital in Ibadan have returned to duty after completing a three-day warning strike linked to persistent electricity and water problems. The resumption reduces the immediate disruption for patients, but the dispute itself has not disappeared.

Doctors directed to return

The Association of Resident Doctors at UCH instructed its members to resume work at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 15. The direction was contained in a memo signed by the association’s president, Dr Uthman Adedeji, and its general secretary, Dr Mary Awodiji.

The doctors had begun the warning action on Monday. Their complaint centred on the electricity crisis and chronic water shortage affecting the College of Medicine axis of the institution.

Resumption is not the same as resolution

The association’s demands include restoration of electricity, repairs to faulty circuit-breaker backups and uninterrupted power across the hospital. Those demands should not be treated as already met simply because doctors have resumed their duties.

The association had issued a seven-day ultimatum running from October 12 to October 19. It also warned that a longer strike could follow if the problems remain unresolved. That leaves hospital management, doctors and relevant authorities with a short window to prevent another escalation.

What the dispute means for patients

Power and water are basic operating requirements in a teaching hospital. They affect theatres, laboratories, wards, infection control and the ability of medical teams to work safely. Even when clinical staff are present, unstable utilities can put pressure on both treatment and morale.

Patients and families will therefore be watching more than the end of the warning action. They will want to know whether the underlying service conditions improve and whether appointments, procedures and emergency care can continue without avoidable interruptions.

The issue also fits into a wider national conversation about household costs and essential services, including the pressure created by rising energy expenses and the need for dependable public infrastructure. Coverage of other public-service and security developments likewise shows why institutions need reliable systems behind the people working in them.

The next deadline

October 19 is the key date in the current warning. If the listed demands are addressed, the hospital may avoid a deeper confrontation. If not, the association’s warning of further industrial action could become the next major development.

For now, resident doctors are back at work, but the return should be viewed as a pause in the dispute rather than its final chapter.
