Court of Appeal Ruling Keeps NDC in 2027 Race, Party Leader Says

The Nigeria Democratic Congress says it remains eligible to participate in the 2027 general elections after an appellate court overturned a Federal High Court decision that had ordered the party’s deregistration.

Party says its registration remains valid

National Leader Henry Seriake Dickson said the Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja, set aside the earlier Lokoja judgment. He described the decision as a protection of the party’s right to take part in political activity.

What the ruling changes

The immediate effect is that the NDC can continue organising, preparing candidates and planning for the next electoral cycle, subject to the wider legal and administrative requirements that apply to every registered political party.

A test for Nigeria’s crowded political field

The decision adds another layer to the country’s evolving multiparty contest. Smaller parties face the challenge of building structures, presenting credible candidates and convincing voters that their platforms can translate into practical governance.

That debate connects with our analysis of Nigeria’s rule-of-law concerns, opposition cooperation ahead of 2027 and the pressure around the ruling party’s political management.

Conclusion

The appellate ruling gives the NDC room to proceed, but legal survival is only the first step. The party’s influence will ultimately depend on its message, organisation and ability to earn public trust before voting begins.
