The Ondo State Government has banned the sale and distribution of alcoholic drinks and other substances whose sources, contents or regulatory status cannot be verified.
Why the directive was issued
The order followed reports that 30 people died and 50 others were hospitalised after consuming a local herbal alcoholic mixture popularly called “monkey tail” in Odigbo Council Area.
Commissioner for Information and Orientation Idowu Ajanaku said the state was taking the step to prevent further casualties while health officials investigate the substance suspected to be responsible for the deaths.
What sellers and residents should know
The directive covers products sold in sachets, bottles or other forms when their source, contents or approval status cannot be established. Sellers and distributors have been told to stop handling such products immediately.
The government also warned residents against consuming drinks that do not carry verifiable regulatory information, particularly products presented as herbal or locally blended alcoholic mixtures.
Investigators begin scientific checks
The Ministry of Health has deployed scientific officers to affected communities to identify the substance involved. Security agencies have also been directed to enforce the ban and act against illegal distribution.
