Police in Cross River State have taken a theatre assistant into protective custody while investigating an alleged unauthorised hernia procedure carried out at a private clinic in Ekori, Yakurr Local Government Area.
How the case came to light
The patient, a 60-year-old man whose identity has not been released, reportedly developed complications after the procedure on September 8. He was later taken to Ugep General Hospital, where concerns were raised about the circumstances of the treatment.
Police said the patient was brought to the hospital by 33-year-old Bassey Bassey on September 11. Officers intervened after members of the patient’s family allegedly attempted to mob Bassey at the facility.
Investigation is still ongoing
The state police command said the suspect described himself during preliminary questioning as a theatre assistant who performed the procedure in the absence of his principal. Investigators are verifying his professional status, qualifications and the events surrounding the operation.
Authorities are also examining the nature and cause of the patient’s complications. Police stressed that no conclusion has been reached on criminal responsibility or on whether the procedure caused the patient’s condition.
Police warn against jungle justice
The command urged residents to avoid mob action and allow medical and criminal investigations to run their course. It said anyone found culpable on the basis of credible evidence would face the law.
