The National Democratic Congress says it is prepared for the 2027 general elections and has candidates for all 28 governorship seats scheduled for contest. Senator Victor Umeh made the claim while dismissing suggestions that the opposition party is absent in several states.

Party outlines its electoral structure

Umeh said the party had also fielded candidates for the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly. He cited figures of 109 senatorial candidates and 360 House of Representatives candidates, while describing the party’s membership as expanding.

Focus on polling-unit coverage

Beyond nominations, the senator said the party would deploy agents to polling units across the country. He argued that the ability to obtain result sheets signed by presiding officers would be central to protecting votes and resolving disputes after voting.

Umeh also said the party was building a network of polling-unit executives and coordinators. Such structures can improve communication on election day, although their effectiveness will depend on training, accreditation and the ability to operate transparently within electoral rules.

Questions remain ahead of the campaign

The party’s confidence comes as campaigns develop and disputes over candidate lists continue to attract attention. Umeh said the NDC had concerns about some names displayed on the electoral commission’s portal and could pursue legal remedies through the proper process.

Political strength will ultimately be tested through verifiable nominations, public support, credible organisation and compliance with election regulations. Claims about popularity will also require evidence as the campaign period progresses.

Conclusion

The NDC’s latest position signals an attempt to project nationwide readiness. Its next challenge will be converting its stated candidate coverage and polling-unit plans into an accountable, measurable field operation.
