The Federal Government has launched the Nigeria Alcohol Policy and Multisectoral Implementation Plan for 2026–2030, targeting the health, social and economic harms associated with harmful alcohol consumption.
Policy covers the entire value chain
Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate said the framework will address the production, distribution, marketing and consumption of alcohol. The government also acknowledged the industry’s role in manufacturing, employment, agriculture and industrial supply chains.
Officials said harmful use is linked to disease, injuries, violence, mental-health challenges, financial hardship and lost productivity. The policy will monitor compliance, illicit and unrecorded alcohol, access to care and changes in alcohol-related illness and injury.
Focus on prevention
NAFDAC said the programme would protect consumers, especially underage people and other vulnerable groups. The policy is also aligned with national, African Union, Sustainable Development Goal and World Health Organisation commitments.

Implementation matters
The success of the five-year plan will depend on coordinated enforcement, public education and measurable reductions in alcohol-related harm.
