US Court Cancels Immigrant Visa Suspension Affecting Nigerians

A United States federal court has struck down a policy that suspended immigrant visa processing for citizens of 75 countries, including Nigeria.

Judge questions legality of suspension

US District Judge Jeannette Vargas described the directive as unlawful and said the Secretary of State had exceeded statutory authority. The policy, introduced in January, had paused immigrant visa issuance on the grounds that applicants from the listed countries could become dependent on public assistance.

The ruling followed a legal challenge brought by immigrant rights organisations, US citizens sponsoring relatives and affected visa applicants. The case focused on whether nationality could be used as the basis for a broad suspension of consular processing.

What the decision means for Nigerians

The decision is significant for Nigerians with family-based immigration applications and others affected by the suspension. However, applicants should rely on official US government notices for practical information about case processing, interviews and documentation because court decisions may be followed by further administrative steps.

Conclusion

The judgment removes a major obstacle for applicants from Nigeria and other affected countries, but the next steps will depend on how US immigration authorities implement the ruling.
