In a move that promises to bring much-needed relief to the pockets of millions of Nigerians, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially announced a reduction in the gantry prices of both Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO). This development comes at a time when the nation is grappling with high energy costs, and the price slash is expected to have a ripple effect on the retail market.

New Price Structure at the Gantry

The 700,000-barrel-per-day facility, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, has revised its petrol price downward to N1,165 per litre, a notable drop from the previous N1,215. Diesel consumers are also set to benefit, as the price has been cut to N1,570 per litre from N1,650. These adjustments represent a N50 and N80 reduction per litre for petrol and diesel, respectively.

Market Impact and Future Outlook

Economic analysts suggest that this reduction will likely force retail pump prices across the country to follow suit, potentially lowering transportation costs and the price of essential goods. The National President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), Billy Gillis-Harry, has expressed optimism, noting that prices could decline even further if landing costs continue their current downward trend.

Conclusion

The price reduction by Dangote Refinery is a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward energy self-sufficiency and price stability. As the refinery ramps up its operations, Nigerians remain hopeful that these savings will translate into a lower cost of living for the average citizen.
