The political landscape of Kano State has been rocked by the resignation of former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This move, announced on Sunday, April 19, 2026, is widely seen as a precursor to his imminent defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a development that could significantly alter political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A Calculated Exit: Consultations and Resignation
Shekarau, a veteran politician who governed Kano State for two consecutive terms between 2003 and 2011 under the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), confirmed his departure from the PDP after extensive consultations with his influential Shura committee—a core group of his political supporters. His formal resignation letter, dated April 19, was submitted to the PDP Chairman of Giginyu Ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, with copies also sent to the state and local government PDP chairmen.
In his letter, Shekarau stated, “Accept this letter please as notice of my resignation from my position as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party with effect from today.” He further clarified that the decision was a collective one, following “wide and extensive deliberations within my political group to pursue our political career in a different political party.”
The Road to APC: An Invitation Accepted
The former governor’s resignation comes just days after the APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, publicly extended an invitation to Shekarau and fellow PDP chieftain Bello Hayatu to join the ruling party. Shekarau’s move is a clear indication that he has effectively accepted this invitation, with APC posters already adorning his Mundubawa Avenue residence in Kano, signaling his new political alignment.
Shekarau’s political journey has been marked by shifts across various party platforms, reflecting the dynamic nature of Nigerian politics. His exit from the PDP represents another significant blow to the opposition party, which has been experiencing a rapid exodus of prominent figures as the 2027 general elections draw closer. This defection is expected to strengthen the APC’s foothold in Kano State and potentially influence the broader national political landscape. For more political updates, visit our politics section.
