“Don’t Marry a Broke Man at 35”: Nigerian Lady’s Controversial Advice Sets Social Media on Fire

The internet is currently buzzing with intense debates after a Nigerian woman shared her highly controversial views on dating, marriage, and the societal pressures faced by single women. In a viral video that has sparked thousands of reactions, the lady advised women to be ruthless in their selection of a partner, warning them against settling for less just to escape the “single” stigma.

The Controversial Advice

In the video, which has been widely shared across Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, the unnamed woman did not mince words. She specifically targeted women in their 30s who often face immense pressure from family and society to get married.

“Don’t marry a broke man at 35, he won’t make it,” she declared boldly. She went on to advise women that if they must marry, they should look for men who are at least as wealthy as their fathers, rather than starting from scratch with someone who is still struggling to find his footing.

But the most shocking part of her advice came when she touched on the topic of married men. In a statement that set the internet ablaze, she suggested that single women should not automatically reject a “good man” simply because he is already married, arguing that financial security and peace of mind should take precedence over societal moral codes.

The Internet Reacts

As expected, her comments triggered a massive wave of reactions, highlighting the deep divide in modern Nigerian dating culture.

Many users, particularly men, slammed her advice as toxic and materialistic. “This is why many good women end up being single mothers or single aged women. Why is it hard for them to find a good man and build together?” one frustrated user commented. Another added, “This is the kind of advice that destroys homes. Encouraging women to go after married men is just evil.”

However, a surprising number of women agreed with her underlying message, even if they didn’t support the part about married men. They argued that the economic realities of 2026 make it dangerous to marry for love alone.

“This is 2026… nobody is willing to get married or even date a man who is going to stress her life unnecessarily,” a female commenter wrote. “The cost of living is too high to be doing ‘let’s build together’ with a man who might eventually cheat on you when he makes it.”

The Pressure on Nigerian Women

The viral video has once again brought to the forefront the intense pressure Nigerian women face regarding marriage. From a young age, many are conditioned to view marriage as the ultimate achievement. However, as more women become financially independent and career-focused, the traditional dynamics are shifting.

A recent trend on social media shows more women openly rejecting the “suffer with me” narrative, opting instead to remain single until they find a partner who meets their financial and emotional standards. As one Canada-based Nigerian woman recently stated in another viral clip, she is “happy not to have married for love,” a sentiment that continues to challenge traditional Nigerian men to step up.

What Do You Think?

Is the lady’s advice a harsh but necessary truth for the modern Nigerian woman, or is it a toxic mindset that is ruining relationships? Should financial status be the ultimate deciding factor in marriage?
